UIEMS wishes you a safe and fun filled summer!
Hello,
I hope you all enjoyed your winter break. UIEMS has a few exciting opportunities starting the first week of classes.
We now have ride times available with Johnson County Ambulance Service. This will take place every Friday afternoon/evening from 15:00 to 23:00 beginning on January 28th.· In order to give members the best possible experience, we will only allow one person to do ride time on a given night. If you are interested in participating, please go the UIEMS website and register for the event. The ride time slots will be given out on a first come, first serve basis. Registration for each week's ride time will open on the Friday four weeks before the event and close a week in advance. If you are interested in a specific ride time that is already full you can click on the "Full" button in the registration menu and get added to the waiting list in case a spot opens.
On Thursday, January 20th, we will be going on a tour/orientation of the JCAS station. This will give members an oppportunity to become familiar with how things work at JCAS before they begin to do ride time. Even if you don't think you will be doing ride time this semester, the tour will give members the opportunity to see how JCAS works in our local EMS system.
The third upcoming event is the beginning of the Campus Community Emergency Response Team (C-CERT) Training. This will be taught by Bruce McAvoy, the Fire Safety Coordinator, and UIEMS Liason to the DPS. C-CERT training will prepare members to deal with emergencies within their community. This training will begin on Saturday, January 22nd at 1pm. The course is broken into multiple parts, some of which include Emergency Preparedness, Fire Safety, Emergency Medical Operations, and Disaster Psychology. The class will be held every Saturday at 1pm until we cover all of the units. Each day's section will last between 2 an 4 hours which will include both classroom education as well as hands-on activities. The course will be held at The University of Iowa Department of Public Safety which is located in the southwest corner of the Old Capitol Mall on the lower level. If you have any interest in any of the topics covered in the C-CERT class I highly recommend coming to check it out. Finally, anyone who is interested in going to the NCEMSF conference needs to email Adam by Friday at operations@uiems.org so that he can get the paperwork processed to reimburse you for the hotel and registration fee.
I hope everyone takes advantage of these great opportunities coming up early this semester. Please remember to register for events you plan to attend on the website. If you have any questions about the ride time, JCAS tour, or CCERT training, please contact me at asst-training2@uiems.org
Thanks,
Nathan Miller
