Team Activities Day

This event will be held Sunday, October 16th at noon in the Minnesota Room (347) of the IMU. Free lunch! Then members will learn various aspects of first aid and medicine and also some ways to respond in common emergency situations. There will be stations for spine and joint immobilization, treatment of traumatic injuries, gathering a medical history, scene safety and personal protective equipment, common medical conditions found in emergency medicine, and assessing patient condition and checking vital signs. Please register for this event so we get enough food and get a big enough room. Also, please try to wear a watch that day for timing vital signs. You don't need to wear your polos to this event unless you want to. Hope to see you all there!

Upcoming BLS Trainings

There are two more BLS trainings this month on October 13th at 6pm in the Minnesota Room (347) of the IMUand October 20th at 6pm in the Notrthwestern Room (245) of the IMU. Both events are full. No worries for those of you who haven't gotten in on this yet, more BLS trainings will be coming up later. For those of you who are registered, please be sure to show up. If you have registered but cannot attend, please cancel your registration or email communications@uiems.org if you cannot cancel it on your own.

ETC shadowing is happening!

Dates open four weeks in advance and close two weeks in advance. This is why you are not able to register for them yet for those of you who have tried. Ride-alongs start on October 28th. Be sure to register for both of these opportunities before the spots are filled.

UIEMS supervisors are currently working on setting up shadowing with the Iowa City Fire Department! We will let you know more later.

ED Volunteering

Applications have been reviwed by the supervisors and they are being reviewed by the ED team. If you applied, you will be contacted about interview times and who has been selected. Thank you to all those who applied.

Must Pay Dues

For the few members who have not yet paid dues, you can bring them to a supervisor during office hours. The office hours are held in the Student Organization Office on the 2nd floor of the IMU and times are listed on our website's calendar. Do not go to the Department of Public Safety (UI Police) to pay dues or ask questions. They do not have the resources to take the money or answer your questions about our group. Please email us at contact@uiems.org for general questions. Please email operations@uiems.org if you have questions about dues or apparel.

Polos in, T-shirts Coming Soon!

Polos (and soon t-shirts too) can be picked up at office hours or at member events. Office hours are held on the second floor of the IMU in the Student Organization Office right above the bank. Times that our office will be staffed are found on the calnedar.

Extensive Advertising Campaign Pay Off Big for new Student Org

Cambus Posters, Emails, Handouts, and Face to Face Recruitment Pays Off Big for EMS Organization

September 6^th, 2011, Iowa City, IA- Any student organization leader knows that the start of the academic year is the most critical. Getting new members in to the student run organization at this busy time of year can be a struggle, but the leadership of The University of Iowa Emergency Medical Services Student Interest Organization (UIEMSSIO) planned all spring and summer and executed their public relations campaign flawlessly.

Screening

United Way of Johnson County and the Englert Theater will host a free screening of New York Says Thank You -- a powerful story of how, through service to others, people transform the world and themselves -- on Thursday, October 13 at 7 pm at the Englert, 221 E. Washington Street, Iowa City. Doors will open at 6:30 pm.

IEMSA (Iowa's Emergency Medical Services Association)

This conference is on November 11-12 in Des Moines. You can attend both days or just one if you want. We will have an October 21st deadline for out members to let us know if they are interested in going, with preference for funding given to those who are EMT certified. This is because they receive continuing education hours for attending this event. The event will probably be capped for the number of members who receive funding from us at 8 people. This would give everyone about $90 to make the total cost of the conference (for both days) approximately $100.
